COMMENTARY
ON
WOMAN BY THE WELL AND HER FIVE HUSBANDS
(John 4:18 [KJV])
For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
The woman by the well admitted to having five husbands, and the one she now has was not her husband. What is going on here with this man that she now has?
This study is a follow on from part 5 in our studies.
This woman by the well had five husbands, and the man who had her now was not her husband. Again (Pt 5), we need to understand the following (shared from Pt 5). The Bible’s definition of adultery and fornication. These definitions were changed over 100 years ago – Go here to understand the Bible’s definition (long version).
Short version.
Adultery – A WOMAN Becoming one flesh with a covenant/ an agreement. Then she goes and becomes one flesh with a different man – this is the sin of adultery. This does not apply to a man. It only applies to a man if he becomes one flesh with a married woman. David only sinned when he became one flesh with Bathsheba (a married woman).
Fornication – Becoming one flesh without a covenant (no commitment). A harlot or whore. This is done by a man or woman.
THE MAN WHO WAS NOT HER HUSBAND
The first five men were her husbands because they were in covenant with the woman. Under the Old Covenant, they were divorced by the law. The man who had her now was not in a covenant with her. It was a relationship of fornication. There is a right and wrong way to become one flesh.
Becoming one flesh with a harlot/whore is the wrong way.
(1Cor 6:16 [KJV])
What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
