ON

CAN A WIFE SEPARATE FROM HER HUSBAND?

(1Cor 7:10-11 [KJV])
10. And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: 11. But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.

Does the verse under study give an option for the wife to be separate from the Husband? The world church teaches that this verse is an option that a woman can take if she feels compelled to leave her husband. TTGM will try to meat out the meaning of these verses by using a question and answer format. We will do it in three bites.

Question to wife: Where does it say that separation from your husband is an option in the captioned verses 10-11?

Answer: There is NO option mentioned.

TTGM: Why? The command is coming from the Lord and He explicitly states, “Let not the wife depart from her husband”. No option is spoken in this command or after. Following on from what was commanded a “but” (conjunction) is used; this implies that the woman knows the command but decides to do otherwise (for reason).

Let us use an analogy for those that are not yet up to speed:

You are working at a desk and your boss comes out of his office and instructs/commands you to stay in your chair for one hour. Note: He did not say you can get up and come back every 5 minutes, He did not say you can leave in that hour if you feel like it, if he did this, he would have given you an option. The Lord gave no option in Verse 10 or 11.

Question: Your boss leaves, “but” then you decide to leave the chair. Have you broken the order/command from your boss?

Answer: Yes

Conclusion: You did not exercise an option given to you, you exercised your choice to get up and do as you so pleased.

Question: If the wife departs (by choice) in disobedience to the Lord’s command, under what circumstances would justify this?

Answer: No clear answer was given.

TTGM Answers (based on doctrinal study method – Item 2): If the relationship is a good one, the wife or man should not separate on their own accord, in fact they should only do so by mutual consent (agreement):  

(1Cor 7:5 [KJV]) 
Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency.

So, why would scripture make mention to the wife leaving? The answer is in the words “or reconcile” in verse 11, used by implication, the couple is having trouble in the relationship. There is a problem that caused separation and to come back together reconciliation will be required.

Let us now look at word meaning – Reconcile

English: To restore a friendly relationship; to bring back to harmony.

Greek: G2644 καταλλάσσω katallasso (ka-tal-las’-sō) v.

  1. tochange mutually.
  2. (figuratively) to reconcile.

Let us use another analogy in full (observing the two verses):

According to verse 10: Now after the boss said don’t leave for an hour; but now for some reason the chair gets HOT, and you decide you could sit no longer and you leave the chair and office (separate).

According to verse 11: You have decided to separate, but you cannot go to another chair in another office on another job with another boss; you have to remain by yourself (unmarried). Or you can look to see how best (both parties) you can cool down the hot chair, so that you can again sit on it (reconcile the relationship).

Question: In verse 11, the man was given a direct command too, “Let not the man put away his wife”. On the same note as a follow on from verse 10, does this mean the man has an option too?

Answer: No

TTGM Conclusion:

The man should never put away his wife and the wife should never leave the husband. They should only separate if they agree together to do so, and it is specific to fasting etc. But in life things happen and it can prove difficult to stay together. What do we do then/ follow and obey the scripture. Consider the following words and verses in weighing your decision on the matter.

–          To the woman that leaves her husband she should not commit the sin of adultery with another man, she should stay alone or both seek to reconcile. The command is for the woman to stay, but if she separates, a further command is for her not to marry another (warning).

–          To a man, he should never put away his wife. If she (wife) leaves under the cloud of a bad relationship and she stays alone, he should not put her away. If however, he puts her away and marries another, he then has committed the sin of adultery.

–          Any form of separation other than the implied break up of a relationship (that requires reconciliation), must be done by mutual agreement. Why? After you become one flesh with a person as “marriage” is defined by the word* (not by Rome – read below), your body is no longer your own but it now belongs to the other. Two people are now one flesh hence God expects what we call, “harmony of understanding”. In other words, the relationship between a man and woman is paralleled and likened onto Jesus and His church (wife); the believer is in Christ and Christ is in the believer. Would you as a believer separate yourself from Christ – Stop worshiping, praying, glorying, submitting (in case of wife), honoring, respecting etc? If you will not do it to Christ, then why will you do it to your husband/wife? 

(Mark 10:11-12 [KJV])
And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. 12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.

Put away = divorce

Nb. Any marriage after a “putting away” is adultery in the eyes of our God. So what happens in a second marriage of one person or both in a church you ask? Read Mark 10:11-12 again for your answer.

The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
