THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD
(Matt 5:17-19 [KJV])
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
What do Torah keepers do with seemingly difficult commandments? (pt5)
The following commandments are used as examples of why we in this “modern” age cannot keep them. They are said to be outdated or impractical. Some would also say that they are for the Jews only and not for the gentile church. TTGM will explain how the following commandments are treated in scripture. If there is a commandment from the Torah or the New Testament not listed here and it seems impractical, write us and we will add it to the list and explain how it should be applied in our life.
Fundamentals of the Commandments:
– Commandments were given in both the Old and New Covenants.
– God gave man the commandments.
– Men of God that were led by the Holy Spirit were inspired to write the commandments/Torah.
– In the Old Testament God’s people were under the Law (Old covenant). In the New Testament God’s people are no longer under the law but under grace (New Covenant).
– Yeshua (Jesus) is the lawgiver and He is the only one on Earth that has the authority to amend the law of the Old Testament. Why? Yeshua is God.
– Yeshua will also judge His people at His judgment seat. What will the believer be judged against? The law (God’s commandments).
Those difficult Commandments that seem so out of place for our time?
An Eye for an Eye..
(Exod 21:23-24 [KJV])
And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, 24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
The lawgiver (Yeshua) amended (But I say unto you) this law, and this is how it should be applied under the New Covenant. The commandment to the believer is not to return what was taken (eye for an eye), but to take the wrong and offer the other side in love.
(Matt 5:38-39[KJV])
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

The penalty of stoning..
(John 8:4-6 [KJV])
They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? 6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
The lawgiver (Yeshua) made the following statement in verse 7. He gave the go-ahead to stone but made it clear that the only person justified to stone her was the person(s) without sin. When the accusers realized that they had no right to stone the woman (because all of them were guilty of sin), they dropped their stones and left the woman alone with Yeshua. The lawgiver then told the woman, neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more. The fact is, the lawgiver is our Judge and He is the only one with the authority/right to pass judgment. In short, since God came on the earth as a man, sinful man now can no longer condemn by stoning. Why? Yeshua now takes the place as Judge. Why? He has no sin; also, he has been given full authority from the Father to judge both the believer (judgment seat) and unbeliever (white throne judgment) – All mankind will fall under the judgment of Yeshua and the law of God will be used to measure/test our deeds that were done in the flesh.
(John 8:7 [KJV])
So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
(John 8:11 [KJV])
She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

Tithing of your income..
(Deut 14:22 [KJV])
Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.
Tithing was simply food from the land given on behalf of the ministers (Levites) that officiated in the temple (it was placed in the storehouses). IT IS NOT A COMMAND FOR THE CHURCH as most Christians teach. Christians are expected to give offerings to a ministry or to each other, but this should not be called tithing. Watch these presentations that share the sound doctrine on tithing with others – no to lies from the pulpits.

Adultery and it’s link to divorce..
(Jer 3:1 [KJV])
They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.
Putting away a wife (divorce) was allowed in the Old Testament, but our lawgiver made it clear it is no longer allowed (And I say unto you). Divorce is only allowed in the event of fornication by the wife (note: fornication is not sex before marriage as most teach – go study your Bible).
(Matt 19:8-9 [KJV])
He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
Fornication with a couple can only occur during the betrothal period. If the couple has consummated (become one flesh) the relationship, then it is no longer fornication (should the wife become one with another man), but the sin of adultery.
Example from scripture:
Mary got pregnant during the betrothal period and her husband Joseph was going to put her away privately (the bible calls him husband even though he did not as yet know her – he had not yet consummated the relationship). He believed she had fornicated (played the whore/harlot) and got pregnant. However, the angel came to him in a dream and Joseph got the message. Most of us know the rest of the story.
Same original word.
Fornication = Whoredom = H2181 זָנָה zanah (zaw-naw’) v. (same word meaning; two that become one with another with no intention of commitment/covenant – eg: harlots, prostitutes etc )
The intention here is not to list all of the commandments that seem impossible to keep, but rather what we have done here is to give you a guide as to how to study the commandments and better understand them. The commandments were given us, our Lord amended some and some were abolished (laws to do with animal sacrifices – said to be nailed to the cross etc). Keep in mind the following as you study the commandments.
All the commandments of God are based on love (love for God and love for your neighbor/self). Sin is based on hate. When you sin against someone you are showing hate.
- As you examine a commandment first find out where is love directed (God/neighbor/self)
- Ask, is this commandment still applicable in our time in light of the New Covenant?
- If the commandment is still applicable how do you apply it in this culture and time?
Remember: The commandment must be applied to the heart. Sin starts from the heart.
