THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD

Part 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

(Matt 5:17-19 [KJV])
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Teaching the Commandments and how to use them? (pt3)

TTGM will now seek to show the importance of the commandments by teaching how they are to be seen and used.

ABOUT LAWS (note: laws consist of commandments):
The Kingdom of God has laws (found in the Torah and in the New Testament – over 600). All kingdoms (countries) in this world have laws. Each law has a penalty associated with it; they can be minor or major depending on the severity. To have a kingdom/country without a law is an invitation for anarchy. Even organizations have laws, employees cannot do as they please when working for a business; they must abide by the business rules and regulations.

MOST CHURCHES NO LONGER OBEY OR TEACH THE LAWS:
The church uses Galatians, Acts, and Romans to say that the Jewish laws no longer apply to the believer and it was only for the Jews – this will be addressed later in part 4.

THE BIBLE
God inspired the Bible. It was given by God to Israel (Hebrews) for Isreal, about the coming King of Israel (Yeshua/Jesus). People (gentiles) outside of the word of God indulged in pagan practices and laws. God in His mercy made a way for the gentiles to be saved as their pagan practices and beliefs could not save them from eternal damnation. After being saved they were expected to follow the man (Jewish Jesus/Yeshua), as He walked.

LET US NOW FOLLOW THE MAN:
On the law and commandments He clearly stated the following (Rem: The Torah contain the commandments – the first 5 books of Moses):
(Matt 5:17-19 [KJV])
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

In obedience TTGM will now teach the commandments. Why?  Yeshua made it clear; until ALL is fulfilled they are to be taught. All has not been fulfilled because Yeshua is still to return and set up His Kingdom. Also, as far as we are aware, heaven and earth are still here.

Fundamentals of the Commandment:
Commandments are to be meditated on so that as a believer you know them well.
(Ps 119:15-16 [KJV])
I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. 16 I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

The commandments are to be loved.
(Ps 119:47 [KJV])
And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.

We are to know the law/commandments:
(Josh 1:8 [KJV])
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Keeping the commandments or being obedient to God’s word is a demonstration of your love for Him.
(John 14:15 [KJV])
If ye love me (Yeshua is God), keep my commandments.

Not keeping (transgression) the commandments/law of God is called sin.
(1John 3:4 [KJV])
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

The following verses instruct the believer to use ALL SCRIPTURE (Old Testament) for correction. Why the Old Testament? When this verse in Timothy was written the New Testament was not put together yet so the writer could only be making reference to the Torah.
(2Tim 3:16-17 [KJV])
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Yeshua shows us how to use the commandments when we are tempted to sin.
The first temptation (Hunger)

(Matt 4:3-4 [KJV])
And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Yeshua responded with the following from the Torah. Believers are expected to do the same. (you will note that this commandment is not found in the ten commandments)
(Deut 8:3 [KJV])
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

In the second temptation, satan did a very interesting move; he used the word from the Torah to tempt our Master. This is called twisting the word and using it deceitfully. However, because Yeshua knew the word responded with the word and dismissed the temptation. It is demonstrated here that it is essential to know how to use the word and recognize how it can be misused – many do this today.  (The temptation here was to test God’s word to prove Him)
(Matt 4:5-7 [KJV])
Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Satan used this from the Old Testament.
(Ps 91:11-12 [KJV])
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Again, Yeshua responded from the Torah (Old Testament)
(Deut 6:16 [KJV])
Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

—-  —-  —-

Using the word against the Word did not work so satan played his master card. In the third temptation, satan offered all that belonged to him (the world – you can only give what is yours).
(Matt 4:8-10[KJV])
Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

True to form Yeshua consults the Torah to fight the advisory (fear in Deuteronomy means reverence/worship)
(Deut 6:13-14 [KJV])
Thou shalt fear the LORD thy Godand serve him, and shalt swear by his name. 14 Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;

HOMEWORK:

Ask yourself the following.

  1. When tempted in any area of your life, do you know the law (Torah/Old Testament) good enough to fight the enemy with it?

  2. If someone uses the word by twisting it, do you know the word good enough to respond and not be tricked or fooled?

  3. Is the Torah only to be used against temptations (as our Lord demonstrated)?

  4. If your answer is “No” what other areas can the Torah be used for? (Hint: maybe for correction as in 2Tim 3:16-17)
