TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL MINISTRY

COMMENTARY

ON

SHOULD BELIEVERS PRAY BEFORE A MEAL?

(Matt 26:26 [KJV])
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

TTGM looks at the relationship between praying over or for our food by what the Word of God says.

Was Yeshua (Jesus) blessing the bread/wine during the Lord’s supper? No, He was blessing His body and His blood. In the context of the bread and the wine, it was used to represent the body and the blood of the Messiah and should not be seen as food/meat for one’s hunger. Read 1Cor 11:23-28. Here is the purpose of the Lord’s super, it is written.

(1Cor 11:26 [KJV])
For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

Was meat (food) ever blessed or prayed over? First, we examine the scripture to find examples that show what men of God did over or for their meat. We searched the scripture to determine if prayer and meat are used together, and we could not find a single instance, so we can safely say that there are none.

There is however a record that states we should receive meat with thanksgiving as noted in the following verse.
(1Tim 4:3 [KJV])
Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

In this verse we find Yeshua doing exactly what is stated in 1Tim 4:3. He gave thanks.
(Matt 15:36 [KJV])
And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

Based on God’s word we can safely say we should give thanks for the meat we are about to eat. However, give thanks to who or what, to the meat, to the person providing the meat, the land the meat came from, or God?

We give thanks to God.
(2Cor 9:10-11 [KJV])
Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness; 11 Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God.

We bless God for the land that provides the food. Note: We bless God for the land AFTER we have eaten.
(Deut 8:10 [KJV])
When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.

Summary:
We can give thanks to God for our meat before (and after) we eat: we should give thanks in all things. This is right to do as we believers should foster a heart of thanksgiving. It is also in order to bless God for the land where the food cames from.
