COMMENTARY

ON

SHOULD BELIEVERS KEEP THE FEAST DAYS?

(Lev 23:4 [KJV])
These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.

God’s Feast days

Let us start by clarifying that the feast days are not Jewish days, but scripture states clearly that they are the feast of the Lord. The Lord has marked events and times by His feast that He has called them His own. It is written.
(Lev 23:2 [KJV])
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.

(Lev 23:4 [KJV])
These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.

Also, we do not study to see how we can avoid obeying God’s law, but rather we study to see how best we can apply the commandments/law of God to our lives.

Introduction:

God calls the following His feast. Note: Yeshua observed the feast days as well. Also, the new testament believer Paul kept the feast days. It is written.
(Acts 18:21 [KJV]) – Here Paul is speaking
But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus.

IMPORTANT: The question is why didn’t the believers go with Paul to celebrate a “must do feast” but they stayed behind? Answer coming later.

The Feast  and times are as follows:

1st Feast – The Passover (Pesach)

  • 1st month (Nisan) Day 14 (Lev 23:4-5); Nisan = March/April.

Should believers keep the Feast days?

The question is; are the feast days commandments meant to be carried out by the believer in Yeshua?

In the New Testament, the instruction to the believer is that we obey the commandments (mitsvah /mits-vaw) and the law (Torah /to-raw). However, nowhere in the New Testament it ever mentions the word “statutes” (chuqqah /chook-kaw) or we are to keep His statutes. This is very revealing.

Is there a difference between a statute, a law or a commandment? Yes, there are three different words with different meanings.

We let scripture speak:
(Gen 26:5 [KJV])
Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandmentsmy statutes, and my laws.

Commandment word and meaning (Strong’s Concordance):
H4687 מִצוָה mitsvah (mits-vaw’) n-f.
a command, whether human or divine (collectively, the Law).
[from H6680]
KJV: (which was) commanded(-ment), law, ordinance, precept.

Statutes word and meaning:
H2708 חֻקָּה chuqqah (chook-kaw’) n-f.
1. an enactment.
2. (hence) an appointment (of time, space, quantity, labor or usage).
[feminine of H2706, and meaning substantially the same]
KJV: appointed, custom, manner, ordinance, site, statute.

Laws word and meaning:
H8451 תּוֹרָה towrah (to-raw’) n-f.
תֹּרָה torah (to-raw’)
1. a teaching precept or statute.
2. (formally) a law.
3. (specially) Torah-Law (i.e. the Ten Royal Edicts (Commandments) and Pentateuch; see Exodus 34:28, Deuteronomy 4:13, Deuteronomy 10:4).
4. (of redemption) the complete Law-of-Liberty in Yeshua the Messiah for the redeemed (see James 1:25, James 2:12, Romans 8:2).

Scripture speaks again:

——

(Ps 89:31 [KJV])
If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;

Commandments word and meaning:

H4687 מִצוָה mitsvah (mits-vaw’) n-f.
a command, whether human or divine (collectively, the Law).
[from H6680]
KJV: (which was) commanded(-ment), law, ordinance, precept.

Conclusion: A statue and a commandment are different categories of instructions.

To best summarize our findings from the word, God gives instructions and each are categorized by name; commandments, statutes, ordinances, and precepts. For the purpose of this study, we will only be focused on commandments and statutes.

So the final question is:

Are feast days commandments or are they something else?

1st Feast – The Passover (Pesach) – not called a statute

(Lev 23:5 [KJV])
In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD’S passover.

—–  —–  —–

2nd Feast – Unleavened bread (Chag Hamotzi) – not called a statute

(Lev 23:6 [KJV])
And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.

—–  —–  —–

3rd Feast – sheaf of the firstfruits (Yom habikkurim) defined as a statute

(Lev 23:10 [KJV])
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest:

(Lev 23:14 [KJV])
And ye shall eat neither bread, nor parched corn, nor green ears, until the selfsame day that ye have brought an offering unto your God: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

—–  —–  —–

4th Feast – Pentecost (Shavu’ot) defined as a statute

(Lev 23:16 [KJV])
Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD.

(Lev 23:21 [KJV])
And ye shall proclaim on the selfsame day, that it may be an holy convocation unto you: ye shall do no servile work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.

—–  —–  —–

5th Feast – Trumpets (Yom Teru’ah) – not called a statute

(Lev 23:24 [KJV])
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation.

—–  —–  —–

6th Feast – Atonement (Yom Kippur) defined as a statute

(Lev 23:27 [KJV])
Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

(Lev 23:31 [KJV])
Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

—–  —–  —–

7th Feast – Tabernacles (Sukkot) defined as a statute

(Lev 23:34 [KJV])
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the LORD.

(Lev 23:41 [KJV])
And ye shall keep it a feast unto the LORD seven days in the year. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations: ye shall celebrate it in the seventh month.

God is precise in His word, in fact we at TTGM believe the following:

God keeps His word. He does not contradict Himself by His word (no contradiction between the OT/NT). Lastly what is written in what we call the Old Testament is not old or outdated; it is eternal and forever relevant. We can close our eyes and stand on any word that comes from God.

Based on our findings, there are only three feast that are not called a statute. So if not defined as a statute, it is required to be kept as a commandment.

Going back to the feast that Paul kept: Some theologians believe the Feast day to be that of Pentecost (a statute). This could not be confirmed by TTGM, but if it was indeed Pentecost, it would explain why the Gentile believers did not go (not a commandment but a statute). Please note that more study is required to confirm this comment.

How should believers keep the three Feast days (not called statutes)? – we let the word speak:

The Passover & Feast of Unleavened Breads:

(Lev 23:5-8 [KJV])
In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD’S passover. 6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. 7 In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. 8 But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven daysin the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.

Believers must gather in assembly (convocation), eat unleavened bread and should do no servile work on the days noted.

There is no need for a burnt offering because the perfect offering has been given.

—–  —-  ——

Feast of Trumpets:

(Lev 23:23 -25 [KJV])
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 24 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. 25 Ye shall do no servile work thereinbut ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

Believers must blow trumpets, gather in assembly (convocation) and should do no servile work on the days noted.

There is no need for a burnt offering because the perfect offering has been given.

TTGM: The question is, why did God not call the three feast statutes? Hmmmm, more study needed..
