COMMENTARY
ON
I LOVE YOU, WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
(John 14:15 [KJV])
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Today's understanding of love is based on the "romance" model. TTGM will explain God’s love to show you the superior nature of His demonstration of love (God’s way).
THE ROMANCE MODEL:
The Romance model is based on feelings (emotions). When we say, “I love you”, it is associated with strong FEELINGS of attraction. The attraction can be based on looks, status, or position in life, and yes money. If you study romance love you will see it is rooted in the carnal or of the flesh. The word of God is clear concerning the carnal mind. It is written.
(Rom 8:7 [KJV])
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
enmity = ἔχθρα echthra = hostility = hostile against God
ROMANCE LOVE DOES NOT WORK:
When we conduct ourselves in the flesh, we have what we have now; broken marriages with tons of divorces (over 60% divorce rate). Why? Feelings change over time, So when you link love to feelings, after the feeling goes, so does your “love”.
Romance love began to gain momentum in the 1800s. Read more about the history of romance.
GOD’S WAY OF LOVE (THIS IS HOW WE SHOULD LOVE – WE AT TTGM HOLD TO THIS):
God’s love is associated with submission to your head (covering) and with it comes obedience. You will notice that Yeshua (Jesus), did not say, If you love me, send flowers, gifts, sing to me, let us candlelight dinner, or have a moonlight walk etc. He said, KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS. Therefore love is associated with obedience. And to be obedient, you must submit. It is written.
(John 14:15 [KJV])
If ye love (ἀγαπάω agapao) me, keep my commandments.
God’s commandments are contained in the law of God. The law of God is spiritual, so when you keep the commandments, you are being spiritual (unlike the carnal mind in Rom 8:7). It is written.
(Rom 7:14 [KJV])
For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
This scripture confirms keeping His commandments is showing love. It is written.
(John 14:21 [KJV])
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
This scripture confirms NOT keeping His commandments is NOT love. You are called a liar if you say you love (know) Him and do not keep His commandments. It is written.
(1John 2:4 [KJV])
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth NOT his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
SO LET US COME BACK TO, I LOVE YOU. HOW ARE WE TO LOVE EACH OTHER?
We are to love each other by loving Him and keeping the commandments of God (not feelings). It is written
(1John 5:2-3 [KJV])
By this we know that we love (ἀγαπάω agapao) the children of God (each other), when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
CONCLUSION:
So when we say, “I love you”, we love (ἀγαπάω agapao) you according to the commandments of God. All of God’s commandments are based on love (500 plus). If you do not know God’s commandments (Torah) and how to apply them to your life, you CANNOT truly love.
Happy is the man whose wife keeps the commandments of God towards him.
Happy is the woman whose husband keeps the commandments of God towards her.
Happy are parents whose children keep the commandments of God towards them.
Happy is God when men, women, and children keep the commandments of God towards Him, for He will give them the comforter (Holy Spirit) that they will gain the gift of eternal life. It is written.
(John 14:15-16 [KJV])
If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter (Holy Spirit), that he may abide with you for ever;
THINK: Will you get the Holy Spirit if you do not keep the commandments of God?
True Love is based on the foundation of God’s word, romance love is based on the foundation of our corrupt flesh (the carnal mind). If you know His Word, you will know how to love God and your neighbour/self.
(Mark 12:30-31 [KJV])
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. 31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
Be blessed in understanding.
