ON
WHAT FEAR SHOULD A BELIEVER HAVE?
(Phil 2:12 [KJV])
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
This paper is to clarify what the scripture means by “fear” in the captioned text.
Some teach that this word “fear” in Phil 2:12 does not refer to being afraid of God, but rather it means reverence of God. However, on checking the word in the Greek, we found that it actually does mean to have a terror or being afraid of God.
The Greek word for fear in the text is G5401 φόβος phobos (fo’-ɓos) n.
alarm or fright.
[from a primary phebomai “to be put in fear”]
KJV: be afraid, + exceedingly, fear, terror
What does this mean?
It means that we should in no way play around with understanding what our salvation means. We should approach our salvation with “terror” in our hearts and trembling. Why? God hates sin and if we knew what His judgment is, we will be so afraid that it will blow our minds.
So in the future take good care and ensure you know what you believe. Hold to the truth with all your strength and never let it go.
