WHAT DAY IS THE SABBATH DAY AND WAS IT CHANGED?

Pt 1  |  Pt 2  |  Pt 3

(Exod 20:10 [KJV])
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

Everywhere in God’s word, it is clear that the seventh day is the sabbath.

(Exod 16:26 [KJV])
Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.

(Exod 31:15 [KJV])
Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

(Exod 35:2 [KJV])
Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.

So when did the sabbath day change (a day of rest)?

It is an important note that “rest” was always part of the service to God in the Jewish faith. As our Lord Yeshua started His gospel message, His followers carried on the custom of resting on the sabbath; thus keeping the commandment (Exodus 20:10)

From the word..
(Luke 23:56 [KJV])
And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

As gentile believers converted to the Messianic Jewish faith they too also rested on the seventh day. Listen to this interview concerning where the change came in later years as the church moved from a Jewish Yeshua that kept the Sabbath to a Gentile Jesus (Gentile Jesus stopped keeping the Sabbath) – see Presentation 1.

After you watch the interview, here is the actual law that was written by Constantine (Rome) to change the day of rest. You will notice, “let all workshops be closed” Why? Rest is to be on the SUN day or the 1st day of the week; divorced from God’s word.

Constantine created the earliest Sunday law known to history in AD 321. It says this:

“On the venerable Day of the sun let the magistrates and people residing in cities rest, and let all workshops be closed. In the country, however, persons engaged in agriculture may freely and lawfully continue their pursuits: because it often happens that another Day is not so suitable for grain sowing or for vine planting: lest by neglecting the proper moment for such operations the bounty of heaven should be lost.”

Chamber’s Encyclopedia says this:

“Unquestionably the first law, either ecclesiastical or civil, by which the Sabbatical observance of that Day is known to have been ordained, is the edict of Constantine, 321 A.D.”

Now as years passed some believers were still observing the seventh day of rest (along with the Jews) and not yet biting into Constantine’s edict. So under the growing power of the Catholic Church (Rome) it proclaimed the following in the year 364 AD…

Following this initial legislation (from Constantine), both emperors and Popes in succeeding centuries added other laws to strengthen Sunday observance. What began as a pagan ordinance ended as a Christian regulation. Close on the heels of the Edict of Constantine followed the Catholic Church Council of Laodicea (circa 364 AD):

“Christians shall not Judaize and be idle on Saturday (Sabbath), but shall work on that Day: but the Lord’s Day, they shall especially honour; and as being Christians, shall, if possible, do no work on that day. If however, they are found Judaizing, they shall be shut out from Christ.”

Note the word “JUDAIZE” is a very large clue as to the thinking of the then leaders of the Church. If you are not up to understanding why the comment (judadize) was used, it meant that believers were doing exactly what Jews did, and that was to obey the sabbath command (rest on the 7th day). However, with the “power” given to the Catholic church, they yet again fulfilled the following biblical prophecy. They moved/changed away from God’s law and made the 1st day (Sunday) the day of rest.

(Dan 7:25 [KJV])
And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

In conclusion, Yes, the day of rest was changed and to this day most in the church are not taught the true doctrine as to why they now worship on Sunday (1st day) and not Saturday (7th day). We encourage you to follow after God’s word and not after the traditions of failed degenerate men.
(Matt 15:9 [KJV])
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

So the day of rest was not stopped but changed from one day to the next. Today most Christians think that you can rest on any day, or the rest day no longer matters because our rest is in Jesus. All of these doctrines have no scriptural foundation. The day of rest is on the 7th day and this has not changed by God’s word.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Man’s law for Sunday was imposed on the people under the threat of harsh punishments – have a look at what was done to gain compliance.
