TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL MINISTRY

COMMENTARY

ON

WHAT EXACTLY IS SIN (INIQUITY) IN RELATION TO THE LAW?

(1 John 3:4 [KJV])
Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Many people do not know what sin is in relation to the Law.

1 John 3:4 is a direct and absolute statement as to what sin is. The church preaches about sin but very few really explain the specifics of sin. To the point, people sin and do not even know that they are committing transgressions to God’s law(eg: eating pig, marriage by pope’s law of 1563, adultery, not resting on the sabbath etc). This is what we call the perfect deception.

TTGM will explain by questions and answers what sin is. This will help in your understanding.

Ques: Should the church continue in sin after being saved by Yeshua (Jesus) and filled with the Holy Spirit?

Choose your answer:

  1. Yes
  2. No

TTGM Ans: The answer is No (2). As believers, we should hate sin. If we continue in sin we work iniquity. The Holy Spirit’s job is to convict us and keep us away from sin. It is written.

(Rom 6:1-2 [KJV])
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Ques: Is there any transgression in God’s law from the Torah (Old Testament) that is no longer a transgression in the New Testament? Another way to say it, is sin in the Old Testament still sin in the New Testament?

Choose:

  1. The law has not changed; it stays the same in the New Testament. So sin is the same.
  2. The law has changed in the New Testament; so sin is different in the New Testament.

TTGM Ans: Since sin is linked to God’s law we must ask the question was the law changed in the New Testament. Was the Law changed? The answer is that the law has not changed (1). It is written.
(Matt 5:17-18 [KJV])
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

nb. Since all has not been fulfilled; the earth is still here (not passed away) and the law has not been destroyed and even to one jot or one tittle has not passed, the law stays the same (again the answer is 1). Most erroneously teach that fulfilled means the law was completed. This is a foolish interpretation of the text. You can read here to find out what Yeshua meant by fulfilled.

Ques: If the law has not changed, then what is the law?

Choose:

  1. The law is God’s instructions to Israel only
  2. The law is God’s instructions to all mankind
  3. The law does not apply to New Testament Christians.

In selecting your answer above, remember what the Apostle said, “Whosoever committeth sin” (John8:34). Who is “whosoever” in the text?

TTGM Ans: The law is all the instructions of God that were given to Moses for the children of Israel. The Law came from God. It was given to His people that were the decedents of Abraham Isaac and Jacob. Why? God’s people were given the law to know what righteous living was. All other nations then “and now” practiced heathen behaviors that transgressed the law/commandments of God. The law was given to Israel, but it applies to all mankind. At the judgment seat (for believers) and at the great white throne (for non-believers) events, we will all be judged in accordance to the law. It is written.

(John 1:17 [KJV])
For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

(Exod 24:12 [KJV])
And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.

(Exod 24:4 [KJV])
And Moses wrote ALL the words of the LORD, and rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

Since the law has not changed, it means that the transgression of the law remains the same. Eg: If a man sleeps with a woman that is married to someone else, it is adultery (Lev 20:10). If a man sleeps with a man as with womankind, it is an abomination (Lev 18:22). Not to profane God’s name (Lev. 22:32). Not to oppress anyone (Lev. 25:17). Not to refrain from helping the poor man (Deut. 15:7). When you study the law, always ask yourself, where is the love in the commandment? Why? Each commandment given by God is based on love. Love either towards God of towards your fellow man or yourself. Read what exactly is love?

Ques: What part of the law must believers keep?

Choose:

  1. Only the 10 commandments written on the tables (leaving out the two greatest, not written on the tablets)
  2. Only the 9 commandments leaving out the Sabbath
  3. Only the commandments written in the New Testament
  4. All the commandments written in the Torah and the New Testament

When you answer consider that the majority of people that say Lord Lord, will not enter into the glory of God, but will be told to depart from me, I never knew you. Read about the Many and the Few. It is written.

(Matt 7:23 [KJV])
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

What is the work of iniquity?

Iniquity is the transgresses of the law/Torah of God, which the majority of the church does today. Why? Most do not know the law or are not taught about the importance of it.

TTGM Ans: Believers must not live anymore in sin so they should keep the entire law. And to keep the law of God, you must know it. Whenever you read the words law, study, scripture or commandments in the New Testament, it refers only to the Torah or the prophets (Tanakh). Why? The first believers in Christ had no concept of a New Testament because it was not put together until later. When Christ was asked questions he would usually respond, have you not read (Torah), it is written (Torah), it was said of them of old (Torah). When the Apostles wanted to support a point of doctrine or allude to a prophecy they usually referred back to the Torah or the prophets. What God spoke is not old to be thrown away for something modern; God’s words are eternal and forever – until all is fulfilled.

(John 14:15 [KJV])
If ye love me, keep my commandments (In the Torah GOD gave the commandments to Moses and also new ones He gave to the apostles).

(1John 5:3 [KJV])
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments (found in Torah and New Testament): and his commandments are not grievous.

(2John 1:6 [KJV])
And this is love, that we walk after his commandments (God’s commandments). This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning (beginning with Moses), ye should walk in it.

(Rev 14:12 [KJV])
Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

(Matt 19:17 [KJV])
And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

In Matt 19:17 Christ made it clear that to enter into life (eternal life), you must keep the commandments.

Since the law has not changed, it means that the transgressing of the law remains the same. So believers in Christ must follow the Torah to be corrected in their actions, decisions and belief.

The majority of believers today no longer look to the Torah for Correction.
(2Tim 3:16 [KJV])
All scripture (Torah or the Prophets only, there was no NT written yet) is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

The earlier assembly of believers used the Torah to check on doctrines (no written New Testament (NT) was put together yet. The NT was put together around 320 AD)

(Acts 17:11 [KJV])
These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures (Torah only) daily, whether those things were so.

What exactly does it mean to live by the law? It means to live a spiritual life. Why? The law is spiritual. God gave it, so to live it is being spiritual.

Let us go to the word and we read.

(Rom 7:14 [KJV])
For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

In conclusion, when you do live according to the law, you are living spiritually. However, when you do not follow the law you are living according to the flesh (carnal). As Paul said, but I am carnal, sold under sin (Rom 7:14). So let us learn the law and follow the commandments of God for Him and for each other.

At TTGM we do and teach the commandments. Should we fail in keeping them, grace steps in and abounds.

We at TTGM do not keep the law to be saved (this is impossible), we keep the law because we are instructed by the one our faith is in (Yeshua). It is by faith in Yeshua alone that gives us our salvation. Should we not keep the law, we become a worker of iniquity. And they that work iniquity will not be allowed to enter into the Kingdom.

Be blessed in your understanding – Read Psalms 119 about the law, commandments and statutes of God.

Are you a “NO TORAH” person and use scripture to support your position, then you need to read this page.
